Psalm 99 English Standard Version The LORD Our God Is Holy 99 The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! 2 The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. 3 Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he! 4 The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he! 6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel also was among those who called upon his name. They called to the LORD, and he answered them. 7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them; they kept his testimonies and the statute that he gave them. 8 O LORD our God, you answered them; you were a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings. 9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy! This is another "call to worship" that the singers and musicians would use to get the people coming to worship the LORD to sing to Him with gladness. It also states that the goal is not for worship to be contained within the Tabernacle or Temple, but that the whole earth would be filled with His worshipers, and even creation itself would join in worshiping the LORD (or more like we are joining the song that creation is already singing).
The LORD has made Israel and Jerusalem in particular a special place--a place in which His people and His glory would dwell. It was the place chosen for His holy temple, and it was the place where His plan of salvation would be accomplished. It is the city of the Great King (and that is not King David, even though it is known as The City of David). It is the city from which Messiah will rule and reign for 1,000 years and there will be a New Jerusalem that will come down from heaven when there is a new creation and heaven, and earth will be one again. This psalm sings of the reign of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords from David's throne in Jerusalem. He will reign with righteousness, justice and equity, All the peoples of the earth will come to bow before Him. The same God we will serve and worship in the coming Kingdom is the one that led the nation of Israel out of Egypt, and whom Moses and Aaron ministered before as priests of the Old Covenant. The LORD heard their cries of repentance and forgave them of their sins (even their intentional sins which could not be covered over by the blood of bulls and goats). The LORD is the savior of the people both from their physical slavery and their spiritual slavery. For this reason, this psalm calls them to worship the LORD with gladness, and to make the journey to come to His holy mountain, Mount Zion, where Jerusalem and the Temple of the LORD are. There the nations of the world would gather to worship the LORD. Let all His people bow before Him and sing His praises! Comments are closed.
