Psalm 75 English Standard Version God Will Judge with Equity To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Psalm of Asaph. A Song. 75 We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds. 2 “At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity. 3 When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah 4 I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn; 5 do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.’” 6 For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, 7 but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another. 8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs. 9 But I will declare it forever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. 10 All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up. The LORD will judge perfectly, though I don't know that the definition of "equity" here is the same as what we would think of when we think of "equity" today--which is equality of outcomes. There are two outcomes possible--one for those who are in Christ and those who are not in Christ. Those who are in Christ will receive the rewards that He has earned, and those who are outside of Christ will get the wage of sin (eternal death) that they have earned. Is it fair that Christ took our death so that we could have His life? Maybe not, but it is completely just, and it will be equitable in that everyone who receives eternal life gets the same eternal life as everyone else. Those who receive an eternity in hell will go to the same hell as everyone else that is outside of Christ. However, there is some indication that punishment will be more severe for some than for others.
No one will escape the LORD's judgment. Not the strong, the rich, the powerful, or the wise or the famous. They will all drink of the cup of wrath of God (unless Jesus has already done that for you). When will this happen? In the last days which are described for us in the book of Revelation. Those under the wrath of God will drink of this cup to its dregs (they will drink every last drop, even the gross stuff that's at the bottom of the cup). Those of the world that think themselves strong will find out how weak they are when they stand before the LORD in judgment, but those who find their strength and hope in the LORD will be saved and will stand strong in that day. Daniel WestfallI will mostly use this space for recording my "journal" from my daily devotions as I hope to encourage others to read the Bible along with me and to leave a legacy for others. Archives
