Psalm 2 English Standard Version The Reign of the LORD's Anointed 2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. This is another Messianic Psalm about the reign of the Son, the LORD's Anointed, the Lord Jesus Christ. The kings of the earth will conspire together to wage war against Him, but who is like the LORD and His Anointed? No man or army of many men can stand against the LORD or His Anointed.
Jesus will laugh at them from His throne in heaven and will pour out His wrath on them (we'll see this in the book of Revelation). The Father will tell them that He has established the throne of His Son. No one will be able to thwart the plans the Lord has established. The only man to whom the Father has said, "This is my Son" is Jesus (both at Jesus' baptism and on the Mount of Transfiguration). The Father has promised the Son all authority in heaven and on earth, an inheritance of the nations (the remnant of all those who are saved from among all nations and the New Heavens and the New Earth). He will crush all of His enemies and those who rebel against Him and His Kingdom and the plans of His Father. The rulers of the earth are told to be wise and realize they cannot win and they should submit now to His authority. They should "kiss the Son" as a sign of friendship and peace. They should make peace now so they can escape His coming wrath. Those who are found in Him in that day will be blessed, as they will not be under the wrath of God. We will be able to take refuge in Him in the same way Noah and his family found refuge in the Ark. Because of His finished work, we can be sure of our salvation, knowing that He took the wrath that we deserved so that we could be blessed with the blessings that only He deserved as the Only-Begotten Son of the Father.
