Proverbs 30:15-17 English Standard Version 15 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give. Three things are never satisfied; four never say, “Enough”: 16 Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, “Enough.” 17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. A short passage today, but there will be a larger passage tomorrow and the day after. We don't often use leeches in modern medicine, but they were commonplace back then and everyone would have understood calling someone a leech who only wanted to take from you and they only ever said "Give, Give." Such a person is never content, never satisfied, never able to say "Enough" because they are full or recognize their needs have been more than met.
Then the comparison is made that Sheol, the place of the dead (specifically talking about the wicked dead here) is like this type of leech or glutton that eats and eats the souls of the wicked but is never satisfied. It never says "Enough." It is like a thirsty man who drinks saltwater so that his thirst is never satisfied or the unquenchable fire that will consume and destroy everything around it that it has opportunity to spread to. --at least the fire eventually runs out of fuel, but how long will it take for Hell to run out of wicked men to consume? Who are these kinds of people who are consumed by Sheol (Hell)? The kind that are disrespectful and disobedient towards their parents. In the end, they will be part of the great supper for the unclean birds that come and feast on the flesh of the wicked that were in rebellion against the LORD and His Annointed One (His Christ, that is Jesus). The ravens and the vultures will gorge themselves. They too will not be satisfied until all the wicked of the earth have been consumed. (see Revelation 19: 17-21) Comments are closed.
