Proverbs 30:1-6 English Standard Version The Words of Agur 30 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle. The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. 2 Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. 3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. 4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know! 5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. The rest of the book of Proverbs are words of wisdom written by other authors. This passage was written by Agur son of Jakeh. Since these words are called an oracle, then it is likely that Agur was a seer or a prophet as an oracle is a message from God through a prophet that answers a question that has been asked.
The proverb begins by pointing to the fact that man can never be intelligent enough or wise enough to figure out everything there is to know about God. His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We are just men. We are not bigger than God that we can somehow put Him in a test tube and experiment on Him to figure out everything about Him. No, we would need the Holy One of heaven Himself to come town and reveal Himself to us if we had any chance of understanding Him. That's exactly what Jesus did for us! These words sound much like the answer that Job got from God when Job asked for a mediator between God and man. Only the Lord Jesus who is both God and man can mediate on behalf of both. There are many rhetorical questions here only the One who has ascended to heaven and come down is qualified. Only the One who established the boundaries of the land and the sea at creation is qualified. This proverb specifically points to the fact that the Son of God is the one that will reveal the Father to us! He will reveal the Word of God to us and will be our Shield and Defender. A Refuge and Strong Tower for those who trust in Him. We are to neither add to nor subtract from the Word of God. Anything we add or remove makes us a liar, and God will not be pleased if we pervert His word that we are supposed to be speaking, singing, teaching and preaching. Comments are closed.
