Proverbs 28:22-28

11/5/2024

Proverbs 28:22-28

English Standard Version
22 A stingy man hastens after wealth
and does not know that poverty will come upon him.
23 Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor
than he who flatters with his tongue.
24 Whoever robs his father or his mother
and says, “That is no transgression,”
is a companion to a man who destroys.
25 A greedy man stirs up strife,
but the one who trusts in the LORD will be enriched.
26 Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
27 Whoever gives to the poor will not want,
but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.
28 When the wicked rise, people hide themselves,
but when they perish, the righteous increase.

The stingy man is greedy and chases after wealth as his goal in life.  He does not know that in the end he will be without his wealth and will have nothing but poverty for it is those who realize they are spiritually bankrupt who will enter the kingdom of heaven and have all the riches of Christ.  Those who die outside of Christ will be separated from their earthly possessions that will all be destroyed in the coming judgment and they will have nothing to cling to--they will be in isolation and darkness and suffer extreme pain and torture.

While a man may not immediately accept your rebuke, once he realizes you did it as a friend, you friendship should become even closer as you have moved beyond the friendship of those who are afraid to speak truth that will hurt to one another and moved to the point where you know that at least one of you cares so much for your best interest that he is willing to sacrifice everything for what is best for you.  A friendship based off of nothing but flattery is worthless.

Watch out for the man who takes things from his parents and feels no guilt from it like everything they worked for belongs to him because he wants to spend it and use it for himself.  They are to enjoy the fruits of their labor, and the selfish and greedy child might as well be destroying the estate of his parents like the one who sets fire to it or comes to commit burglary.  It's a slower process, but the one who has the motive to steal, kill and destroy (the evil one we call the devil) is behind both of them.

The greedy person will stir up strife to cause trouble for the one who has something they believe they are entitled to.  They refuse to be content in the LORD.   The one who trusts in the LORD, obeys Him and is content in what the LORD has provided will be taken care of (both now and forevermore).  When the LORD's name is on the line, He will make sure that He takes care of all those who are called by His Name (though they will still go through challenging times and will not be without pain and suffering, hardship, and maybe even times of desperate need).

The one who relies on himself is a fool because there are many things in life that are too big for us to handle on our own--they are God-sized problems that only the LORD can take care of, or God gives us problems that we are supposed to lean on other believers to help out with.  The person who walks in the wisdom of the LORD, even with it is counter-cultural and doesn't make sense to our human minds will be blessed.

The one who obeys the LORD and takes care of the poor (especially for the Jews who were take care of their brothers and sisters that were called by the Name of the LORD), will be blessed by the LORD.  However, the person who turns his eyes away so as to avoid eye contact with the person in need so they don't see their needs, though they are will within their means to help meet that need--that person will face many curses from God.  I will have to admit that I honestly have been this person that looks away too many times in life.

The people are worse off when their leaders are wicked.  They must hide from them.  People literally wait for them to die so that the righteous people can take over and things can be blessed by the LORD again.

I will mostly use this space for recording my "journal" from my daily devotions as I hope to encourage others to read the Bible along with me and to leave a legacy for others.

Occasionally, I'll also post some true blog/opinion pieces focused on what the Bible has to say about current events or the importance of a particular spiritual discipline, or something more topic-related to orthodoxy (right belief) or orthopraxy (right living).  You can also find those blogs over at Faith and Culture.
