Proverbs 24:19-22 English Standard Version 19 Fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked, 20 for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out. 21 My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not join with those who do otherwise, 22 for disaster will arise suddenly from them, and who knows the ruin that will come from them both? Solomon tells his son to not fear what evil men might do to him. He should instead fear the LORD and obey him. He should also not be envious of the wicked even if they appear to have worldly "success" or "wealth," because their choices will eventually lead to ruin, and destruction and all of their material possessions will eventually belong to someone else (they cannot take their earthly treasures with them when they die). The LORD also usually made evil men childless so that they would not pass on their wickedness to future generations (one of the other things in "the evil man has no future" (no one to inherit his "wealth.") The lamp of the wicked (his life and memory of him) will be put out. He will no longer exist and no one will remember him.
Instead, Solomon's son should fear the LORD first and obey the king second (that would be Solomon, who was responsible for enforcing God's Law). He should not join with anyone who rebels against the LORD or the king. In both cases, such rebels will be judged by the LORD or by the king for their rebellion. The LORD and the king will work in concert to punish and perhaps even destroy these rebels. You do not want to be too close to them and get caught up in the judgment when it comes.
