Proverbs 23:21-25 English Standard Version 21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags. 22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. 23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. 24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. 25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice. The glutton abuses food in the same kind of way that the drunkard abuses alcohol. Those who abuses substances to try to feel good for a moment will never have enough money to buy enough substances to make the good feelings last. They will spend all their money on substances to try and get the same high they originally got, and they will never get it again. In fact, sometimes you are unable to get high again and just need the drugs, alcohol or food to just feel "normal" again, because your body stops producing any of the good-feeling endorphins without the stimulus of the food, drink, or medicine. Such addiction will lead to material and often spiritual bankruptcy (a separation from God as the person starts to worship the high and will do anything to get it). Such choices often lead to destitution in the form of not having a home to live in, being estranged from all your loved ones, and not even having clothes to keep you warm.
Listen to the wisdom of the parents that God has given to you (and to the other wise counselors He has given to you who are like parents to you if your parents are no longer alive). Acquire the truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding that they have to offer as if it is fine gold and silver or precious stones. Acquire it, and do not sell it. It is more valuable than all the riches in all the world. A father's heart is glad and rejoices to see his son walking in the ways of the LORD. Likewise, it makes a mother and father sad and keeps them up at night when their children turn away from the LORD and do not follow after Him. Those who love their parents and want their souls to be at peace will follow after the LORD and teach their children to do the same. This way the ancestors who cannot do anything to assure the physical or material well-being of their descendants on this earth can entrust them to the LORD to take care of them and they are sure that they will inherit eternal life and have every blessing that He has prepared for them in the life to come. Who wouldn't want that for their children and grandchildren? Comments are closed.
