2 Chronicles 33:21-25 English Standard Version Amon's Reign and Death 21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. 22 And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, as Manasseh his father had done. Amon sacrificed to all the images that Manasseh his father had made, and served them. 23 And he did not humble himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself, but this Amon incurred guilt more and more. 24 And his servants conspired against him and put him to death in his house. 25 But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon. And the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place. We ended last time by saying we would need to see if Amon would follow the example of his father's early years or his later years. We have the answer pretty early in this passage that his reign was marked by the evil things that he did. He was 22 years old when he succeeded his father as king and took the throne in Jerusalem. How was Amon evil? He also sacrificed to all the images that Manasseh his father had made--that answers our question we had earlier about if Manasseh destroyed the images or just put them outside the city in a place that everyone knew where to get them later. It seems like his son knew exactly where to go get them when he wanted to bring back the idolatry of his father's earlier years. Amon's wickedness was so back that his own servants conspired against him and put him to death in his own house.
We might imagine these assassins to be the heroes, but we should never break the Law and excuse it by saying that we were "doing the LORD's work." The "LORD's work" for each and every one of us is that we would be fully obedient to everything He has commanded of us, just like Jesus was. For the crime of murder, these assassins were put to death by the people, and they lost their own lives. Then the people made Amon's son Josiah to be king in his place (and we'll see that Josiah will be a VERY good king). Comments are closed.
