1 Samuel 11:12-15 English Standard Version The Kingdom Is Renewed 12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.” 14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the LORD, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. The soldier that fought in this battle against the Ammonites were angry that there were so many Israelites who refused to come under the authority of Saul and refused to answer the call to go to battle. The people wanted to kill all of those who were insubordinate and cowardly, but Samuel said that no one was to be put to death. Instead, he would call for a convocation and renew the LORD's covenant with His people and would once again install Saul as the king of Israel before the LORD. They would offer peace offerings/fellowship offerings so that the people would once again celebrate together and Saul and all the men of Israel who fought along with him rejoiced greatly because this feast was partially held for them to celebrate the victory that the LORD had given them, but this was also a way to once again confirm to the people that the LORD had chosen the man, Saul, for this time and task and that the people were to become subject to him. To rebel against the king that the LORD selected was to rebel against the LORD (we see that teaching in the New Testament in Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2).
