1 Chronicles 18:14-17 English Standard Version David's Administration 14 So David reigned over all Israel, and he administered justice and equity to all his people. 15 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 16 and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests; and Shavsha was secretary; 17 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were the chief officials in the service of the king. The administration of justice and equity is not just attributed to David alone, but also alongside David are the members of his cabinet who assisted him: Joab the commander of the armies of Israel, Jehoshaphat the recorder (he is probably the one writing the official chronicles King David), Zadok and Ahimelech who served as high priests, and Shavsha the secretary. Also listed is Benaiah, chief of security and he also commanded the special forces that were not part of the regular army. All these men helped advise the king and had their part in drafting and executing and enforcing the laws that brought about justice and equity, and in many ways, they held David accountable to upholding the Law of the LORD. While none of these men where perfect, they all loved David and they knew the LORD loved David, and that David loved the LORD, and they wanted him to always behave in a way consistent with that, even if we see that they sometimes were willing to do things themselves that David wouldn't do. Having the right cabinet members is just as important as having the right king. Much of the success that came to David by the hand of the LORD came because of the faithful and diligent work of these men.
