Jehoash Reigns in Israel
10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned sixteen years. 11 He also did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin, but he walked in them. 12 Now the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did, and the might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 13 So Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat on his throne. And Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

Jehoash must have been a popular name at the time, because it was not only the name of the king of Judah what we called by the shortened form, Joash, but it was also the name of the new king of Israel (the northern kingdom).  This Jehoash was the son of Jehoahaz, and he reigned 16 years from the capital city of Israel, Samaria.  Like his father, Jehoahaz, he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD because he did not depart from the sin of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who caused the northern kingdom of Israel, as well as many people in the southern kingdom of Judah, to worship the golden calf idols that he made.  Jeroboam had told the people that those idols were the LORD, and these were their gods that brought them up out of the land of Egypt.  The works of the LORD were attributed to idols and essentially to demons (we'll see the Pharisees do this directly in the New Testament right before the passage on the unforgiveable sin).

Apparently this northern king also went by the short-form of his name, Joash, because the text tells us that all the rest of the works of Joash the king of Israel can be found in the book of Chronicles--including battles which he had with Amaziah the king of Judah.  Then Joash king of Israel died and was buried in Samaria with the other kings of Israel  One more significant thing to say about Joash the king of Israel is that he will be king over Israel when Elisha dies.  That will be what we talk about next time.
